have given this book a Hot rating but for one thing - most
of the books content is made up of extracts from other great
books such as - "Painting Wildlife Textures" reviewed
below, "Painting Birds Step By Step" soon to be
reviewed and "Painting and Drawing Animals" also
reviewed below. If you have these books then you already have
much of the content of this one. |

great book by a very realistic painter, but lets clear one
thing from the start, although this book does have examples
using oils, watercolours and acrylics the majority of this
book is devoted to acrylics, the artists preferred medium.
For me the highlights of this book include - Painting Eyes,
Short Fur, Canine Muzzle and Painting White Texture. |

Drawing
Anmals has been recommended by a few great artists and so
I was a little disappointed with it's content. For each of
the animals covered (and these are numerous) there are pictures
of it's skeleton, Musculature and surface texture. The artist
then simplifies the animal down to basic geometric shapes
in different poses, following this there are some fantastic
action drawings of each animal. With all this you might be
wondering what I thought was missing. Well the jump from Geometric
shapes to finished drawing is massive and there are no examples
of how this was achieved. |

This
book has very recently
been published (Aug.
2000) and I had been eagerly awaiting delivery. To say that
I was happy with it is an understatement, this book is great,
every topic on wildlife painting I can think of, is covered
in extreme detail. There are 18 demonstrations such as the
cougar above, a jaguar, an elk, wolves etc. Be warned though,
although this book is described as containing demo's using
a variety of mediums it is mostly for oils. |

is not a demo type book but a collection of paintings by some
of the worlds best wildlife artists. The book is filled with
large format colour prints and each painting has a paragraph
from the artist explaining what they was trying to achieve/capture,
this gives us an intriguing glimpse into the artists thought

book is both practical and inspirational, taking you from
the first preliminary sketches to the magnificent finished
paintings. Demonstrations include a Tiger, Wolf, Snow leopard,
Bison, Kingfisher, Leopard and Cheetah, all except the Cheetah
are painted in oils, the Cheetah is pastel. Plenty of details
throughout, "painting fur with glazes" is of particular
value. Note I believe that this book is mainly for oil painters. |
